need help with an old HO scale 2-8-2 chesapeake and ohio stream engine

will when i bot it at a model railroad show the man said it works, i got it home and it would run on the easy track set i hade made to test used trains i get.it’s an old streamer that gets it power from the tender and the weels a brass, but when i tryed to put it on my train layout it wouldn’t run.the i picked up the back end of the tender’s wheels and it start runing but when i put them back down it wouldn’t. what should i do becuase i know it’s not the track becuase i clean it real go before i tested it on the layout. the only than i can think of doing is getting rid of the old bass wheels in the back and get a newer pair of brass wheels or just get some plastic wheels instade to put in the back of the tender.

thanks very to the people who can help me.

sounds like one of the trucks is turned the wrong way. Try it with all the brass wheels on the same side. Then turn them all to the other side. Should run one way or the other

If it runs when you pick the rear truck wheels off the track then it could be that the rear truck is shorting out. I would try taking the rear truck off and turning it around, just in case someone had the truck off and reassembled it wrong. If there is a wire going from the tender to the engine then it could be a broken wire. Be sure that you clean all the wheels and wipers on the trucks also.

Hope this helps! Jim

Don’t put plastic wheels on the tender, they need to be brass to pick up power.
