NEED HELP! Writing a paper for engli***rying to persude people to be model railroaders!!

My paper has to be 5 paragraphs, 5 sentences each parargraph.
needs and intro, and a conclusion body etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated its due tommorrow!!!

Model railroading is one of the places where people to day can learn that not everything you have needs to be bought or be expensive. All too often the emphasis in society is buying things rather than making them. On a model railroad you buy something basic, you modfify it, you build a kit, you learn to scratch build. You learn that it is possible to do things for yourself without relying on some large faceless corporation to do it for you, and so you learn to be at leasta little self reliant, and can feel good about what you have achieved. That is something you can’t buy at WalMart.

I taught College English for a Zillion Years. I won’t write it for you, but I’ll look it over and make suggestions.

What do you get out of model railroading? Why do you enjoy it? What do you learn? How much time does it take? How much money does it take? How much skill does it take?

So, the first paragraph is as intro. You hit the high spots, say what you are going to do. Maybe bring up three areas that you will expound on. The next three paragraphs, guess what, they expound on the things you brough up in the introduction. In the conclusion, well, you conclude. Show how the points you brought up make your case.

I’ll bet once you start writing you won’t be able to stop at only five sentences per paragraph. Just think about the questions I asked, and it will just about write itself.

I hope you don’t want us to write it for you. You like to write here, you can do it!

jdtoronto is on the right track I’d say (excuse the pun) - stress the transferable skills it teaches (soldering, woodwork, electrics, painting, etc) - all of these can be used elsewhere. I’ve probably saved a fair amount of money by being able to repair items myself using skills learned from model railroading. Hope this is of help!

Make sure to give information on why the hobby is great. Also tell the skills you learn from MR.

Na i just wanted some basic ideas jdtoronto helped me out alot
i am a good student i have a 3.8gpa

this hobby keeps your money on good stuff, and if ur running trains, u wont b getting into trouble or spending money on crap like drugs.

hope u get a good grade on the paper.

Actually, you could go one step further, and start with the question “Did you ever want to rule the world?” This is the hobby that allows you to build and run your own little world.

Elliot, try playing Sim City. You can build, rule and even destroy your own world, I like playing it.

I like that idea!

Dave, have it and played it many times, almost always in sandbox mode with disasters off. I usually build huge subway systems. The original manufacturer, Maxis, had another game called A-Train. I have a copy, but liked Sim City better.

At least in Sim City there isn’t a giant cat that attacks the city (though there is a UFO). It sounds a little Monty Pythonish, but I guess there is one among us who has suffered such a fate in real life.[;)] (see other topic)

I always liked earning the mayor’s statue. When you click on it for info, it tells you how many pidgeons you have pooping on it.[:0][(-D]

Make sure to include the personal satifaction you receive.

As Mouse said, the limits imposed upon your assignment is designed to see how carefully you can craft an interesting and readable essay in a very few words. It is harder than you think, particulalry if you chose a subject dear to your heart. So, an outline, believe ti or not, might be a very useful approach to start with. It will help you to get to the nuts and bolts really quickly, by the third paragraph for sure. The fourth should be examples and amplification of your main points (illustrations of what you mean). Last paragraph is a summary.

Para 1- global subject of Model Railroading
Para 2- making a realistic setting for the toys
Para 3- how the eye can be courted by scale and details
Para 4- examples of how detailng works
Para 5- conclusions and summary

This is just an example; you culd easily discuss numerous subjects inthe hobby at great length. Look at what John Armstrong did with track planning.

It does bill itself as “The World’s Greatest Hobby.” That might be something to mention in either Paragraph 1 or 5.

I like the transferrable skills aspect, and also the self-confidence that you get by building something this complex all by yourself.

You call yourself a model railroader? You need help writing a five paragraph essay on model railroading? What’s wrong with you???[:p] I’m just messing with you.[:p]

Actually, in my honest opinion, the standard five paragraph essay isn’t enough. You can add more, right?[:D]

Did you know that model railroading actually helps those with mental disabilities? I’m not making that up, it was in Model Railroader, but I can’t recall the issue date. It can help you improve such areas as motor skills, as well as creativity and expression.

Model Railroading! The cure for all that troubles you![:D]

We regularly have posts in this form that are more than that.

It worked for me.

Oh, wait, he said Disabilities. I thought you said Illness.

Seriously, you might mention that some of us old fogies find the act of building something very relaxing after a stressful day or week. Come to think of it, as I remember school those days were a little stressful to.

To be really serious I would have to say that Model Railroading has saved me a years worth of counseling.

Just a couple of real quick thots off the top of my head…

You get to use/develop a number of skills, including but not limited to, woodworking, electrical, art (painting & scenery) and use of tools (assembling kits).

You can make it as simple or as complex as you want to. Many people do great amounts of research to make their railroads as realistic as possible.

Plus there seem to be very few “wrong” ways to do things…a number of different approaches can be used to arrive at the same result.

Not quite. The limitations are designed to make the essay easy for the lazy teacher to grade by providing an entirely artificial formula for the student to follow.
