Need Help?

I have over 30 Varney locs and some tenders that my grandfather had from the 50’s or so and I am trying to find some prices/ value or collectors. I am selling the collection and do not have a real good idea of how to price them. Can anyone help me by chance?

Welcome to the forums.

I know there are reference books listing Lionel and American Flyer collectors values. A search of Google (I’m not a fan, but if it works) might find you a similar publication. There are also buyers listed in MR, you could ask them where to find a value guide.

Good luck,

Richard

they probably arent worth what you think. ebay is a good source for value of items.

I would guess you will get more selling them one at a time rather than as a lot. When I want to know the price of something I search and watch ebay’s “completed” similar items.

Then there are always the on-line apprasals like workpoint, autionwalley, etc.

Thank you sir.

Hi, and welcome to the Forum!

I’ll repeat what others have said in that they may not be worth much, Ebay is your best guide, and I would sell them one or two similar ones at a time.

I’ve been on Ebay for many years - bought and sold - and the best time to sell stuff like this is December thru February.

Condition is everything. As you don’t sound like a model RR nut, the locos could be missing parts or be corroded or whatever. I would attempt to clean them up, and list them on Ebay at a low number (say $9.99) and let the market place do its thing. I would list a few each week, not all at once, for then you are competing with yourself.

It won’t take long to find out what they are worth - which is what someone will pay for them.

Good Luck!

E bay may be a place to look to see if your model RR Equipment is listed and WHAT I SELLS FOR,. NOT what it LISTS for and doesn’t sell.

But if you don’t know what you’ve got, you can get ripped off or p*ss customers off if you don’t adequately provide good info on the product, its running ability and condition.

I would also contact a Auction house near you that specializes in Model RR stuff, OR in “antique toys” who might be able to vend it for you at reasonable rates, you can always sent a reserve price if you want as minimum selling price IF you have a accurate idea what ti should sell for.

Another idea: check for nearby MRR clubs that will be able to possibly evaluate and even vend your stuff at reasonable prices, for a commisiion of course, just like the auction house.

Remember this, though, some old stuff is really valuable, usually in pristine working order. Other old stuff is just that…“old stuff” and not worth anything. ANd some old stuff has reasonable value, to a reasonable buyer.

Always take cash if you sell in person or have a club do it and be sure to be there when the club sells it if you can. Also attend the auction. Make sure the Auction house advertises well about the collection to get teh best and most interested buyers.
