I`am trying to build a snow covered lay out, does anybody out there know if there HO pictures anywhere so I can get Ideas ???
already got some suggestions for my frozen lake.
did model railroader have any articles on this topic!!!
I have some free advice on building a snow-covered layout. DON’T. It is difficult at the best of times and once built, almost impossible to keep clean. I know. Been there and sone that. Never again.
You could try making the whole ground out of plaster or something hard, and then spray paint it with a silvery-white. I don’t know if that would work, but it’s an idea.[:D]
It would be easier to clean than a material like glittery cotton, and you could just tape over what you don’t want sprayed. After that, you could use a brush for painting the tops of objects, like lamp posts, cars, and all that stuff. Trees could be painted by simply spraying the top of the tree.[:D]
I had the same idea but bagged it. There was an article in MR some time ago with a Z scale layout that went thru all four seasons. I forgot what the author used for snow in Z scale but it worked well for him.
You want winter scenes?
Check out Jon Grant’s layout here: http://www.railimages.com/gallery/album33
He’s a UK modeler who runs American HO. Awesome-looking winter layout.
Eric Brooman (of Utah Belt fame) also does Winter scenes. He uses baking soda to simulate snow, so I heard.
thanks a million for the web page exellent pictures LongIslandTom
Okay you want the best then here you go:

down at the bottom is the book “New Scenery Tips and Techniques” In there you will find two layouts that have snow coverings. The one to really take a look at is Rand Hood’s layout. the guy is amazing when it comes to the whole snow effect. He models Denver & Rio Grande in the winter. Check-it-out
I think Model Railroader had an article in which they made over their Red Wing Division 4 X 8 layout from a summer to a winter scene. This would have been a few years after the layout was initially built, so about 1998? (I could be way off with the date - I find as I get older things start to run together so fast I can’t keep track). The magazine index available on Trains.com should be able to point you in the right direction.
Red Wing is the other layout that they have in that book that I just talked about.
There is an article in the December 1984 Railroad Model Craftsman magazine that details old sears homes and winter scenery.

Build an HO garden railroad in the arctic circle. Problem solved.
Build a garden railroad and wait for winter, wait, thats not what you wanted. Ive seen ones that have used plaster, they looked good. Hard to keep the plaster off the tracks but looks good.

make sure you like snow, as i’ve heard (and it was reiterated in the Red Wing article) that once you make you layout snowy, you can’t change it back. This includes track and scenery. One more thing that I would do is put in lighting with structure illumination and a lot of LEDs because snow + night wiould be sweeeeeet[4:-)]
