I’m looking to start my layout soon and would like to build my own structures. I’m looking for articles, posts or websites on how to build structures in styrene. I have a ton of Mainline Modeler mags comming and would like to use the plans in them to make my structures. I might also make some of my structures out of wood but I’m primarily looking to make them out of styrene.
I guess to whittle it down I need a “Scratch-building for dummies” type article.
Thanks

Sitka, Alaska
ME too. By the way, we visited Sitka many years ago. One of the best parts of Alaska. We stayed in a RV park on one end of town. Fell in love with the Sitka Spruce. Some day I need to model one of the big trees with the Shamman hut in the roots.
Hey Lucas!! I lived 28 years in Sitka, I was the groundskeeper there. Checkout the book offered by evergreen plastics "modeling in styrene available from NWSL or probably Walthers. Very good technique book. By the way do I know you or your folks? Give me a last name.
Art,
I lived in IL from 1972-1979 and all over MN from '79-'93 then Anchorage and finally Sitka in '98.
Reklein,
I have seen the evergreen book but was unsure on how it applied to building structures. My last name is Barnlund and as I wrote art I have lived here since 1998. I currently work at the Flight Service Station at the airport. Now who exactly are you and when did you move away?
Lucas
Currently sunny in Sitka (this minuite[8D])
Kalmbach, Evergreen, Plastruct, and others offer books on the subject.
Hey a Sitka reunion. Talked to you all before…
Lucas did you decied what timeframe/road your going to model?
Peter (born and raised in Sitka till 1990).
Nigel,
Thanks I found the evergreen one but could not find the plastruct one.
Peter,
I decided to model the CB&Q in the 1950’s keeping the engines from the first half of the '50’s and letting the boxcars go up to the '60’s but avoiding the Q Chineese red. It will prettymuch be freelance.
Thanks again
Lucas
PS: anyone know any websites that go over styrene structures?
I was the city groundskeeper in Sitka from 73 to 98 . I retired in 98 and worked at the Sitka Rose Gallery for two years then moved to Lewiston ID in “00”. To see examples of my work check out nearly all the city parks. To see examples of my model work look in the Lutheran church lobby and at the park service. I built the model of Sitka as it looked in 1840. Be sure to look at the park service one and not the Centennial buildings model. We regularly look at the city’s website for weather changes and the weekly photo contest. Place still looks good but still rains too much for me any more. 90" a year is too much. Also no trains there. Used to be a rail barge facility at the pulp mill but since long removed. They used a Whiting switcher out there. Looked like a big loader with hirail capability. If there is something I can get for you in the way of supplies ,lemme know and I’ll see what I can do.
A howdy to Model alsaska too.
My e-mail is posted in my profile PM me if you like.
