Hi railroaders, I’m looking for any advice on window wipers for my set of Intermountain Erie F3’s. I’ve sacrificed them when popping out the front windows to paint the “windowsill” black. Maybe it’s not obvious but believe me it IS a big improvement over the way Intermountain paints them, making the windows look much smaller because the sills are visible well into the cab. (Okay, lacking an interior it’s still no Athearn Genesis but the $$$ was about 1/2 so that’s [8D] )
So: which brand window wipers (brass or plastic?) is recommended for prototypically accurate modeling? I’ve also given my p2k Alco PA (NYC) new windows (and finally it’s a really good-looking engine!!!) , they’ll need wipers too. And then the other PA’s and E-units in my stable will follow… Did Alco use the same as EMD?
Dang I saw an ad somewhere today for sets of wipers. Of course prototype photos would help, I wish I could find that ad for you. Can’t remember where I saw it. Will keep looking till I find it.
I don’t know how accurate they are for an F3 but A-Line do some very nice ones in plastic and as there eight , I think, on the sprue, you would have plenty left over for another project for about 3 bucks or so. CPPedler
Gappleg, sounds good, i’m curious… CPPedler, thanks I visited the A-line website but it looks like they’re only catering for more modern diesel engines and they have bigger windows so I assume bigger wipers too. Or do you think it doesnt make any difference?
rik,
The A-Line #29200 long and short is what I use. Not sure if they have the short only.
They come gray plastic, just paint them silver on the sprue and install the shorts for the F unit.
Drill the holes just slightly less than a 90 degree to the windshield so they will be positioned snugly against the “glass”.
The long wipers are good for all other taller cab windows on hood units. While your at it why not add the additional details that would be prototypical for your F. Nose grabs/ ladders, over windshield grabs, pilot details, speed recorder, MUs and backup light.
Good looking engine, might as well dress it up.

sounds good, Bob, thanks. About the grabs, I’ll have a close look at some prototype pictures. As long as they’re black, it’s a good idea. Don’t know if i’d be able to get the right color yellow.
