I am in the planning stage for my layout and would love to sit in on an operating session before I start the construction to iron out some questions on realistic operations. I live in central Kentucky and am willing to travel to most places but would prefer KY, TN, IN, IL, OH. I can’t seem to find anyone locally who has operating sessions.
If you can’t find any closer, I can set you up with two in Western PA. We can even work it so they are on consecutive nights if we are lucky. They have slightly different systems, so it might be good to see the contrast.
Dave mentioned the Operations SIG and I just wanted to add my recommendation. Members of the OpSIG can take advantage of the “Call Board” program to get matched up with operating layouts in various areas of the country. Membership is a real bargain and includes the group’s fine Dispatchers Office magazine.
I know modelers can’t always easily get to op sessions on layouts that focus on prototype-based ops – but I consider such op session insight to be critical to getting a good layout design for realistic operations – if you’re into realistic ops, that is.

To that end, I provide lots of “Ops Session reports” on my personal web site that you can read through and study. All my ops session reports have plenty of photos from the session, and recently, I’ve even started doing ops session reports on video.
