Need rules of posting Photo's from other sites on a profile.

What are the rules for posting pictures in someones profile under their name?
Such are a photo from another site such as rrpicturearchives or railpictures dot net? Are there any given copy right rules that some must ibid by? Is someone allowed to freely use pictures from other sites or is it illegal. Need info please.
Thanks,Allan.

All the pix on those web sites are copyrighted by the photographer. You can’t copy them for use anywhere else w/o permission. Permission is usually pretty easy to get. All you need do is email the owner.

You mean the person who took the Photo? Or is it the web site itself?
Allan.

The person who owns the copyright, usually the photographer.

You aren’t clear. Do you mean that you want to take an image and post it under your name? As long as you took the picture or have permission from the photographer, there won’t be any problems.

There are plenty of rules:
U.S. Copyright Office
ibid? Usually the only time I see that is in the footnotes. [:)] Abide? No, you can’t freely take someone else’s picture and include it in your site or work. You have to get permission. You can, however, link to the image. You should also include credit to the photographer on the page. Look at the images in a copy of Trains to see how it’s done.

Ok I understand now. But on more thing. What about what’s called: ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. What does that tell you? I own a CD that has alot of BNSF Photo’s on my Disk. Can I use a Picture from my CD under my Siganture? Allan.

If you took them, yes. If not…no, unless they are in the Public Domain, in other words there so old that the copyrights have expired and no one has renewed them, they pass into the public realm where anyone can use them.

Nothing really. The content owner is just being more explicit in making you aware of rights he already has implicitly. That’s boilerplate, of course, it can be expressed in more graphic terms:

Look for the words “Do not remove…”

No, again. Buying a CD does not give you unlimited rights to reproduce its content, images, music, words, etc., for access by others. Have you not been aware about all the ruckus about digital copying that’s been going on?
Copyright Lesson II

In pretty much all the cases listed above, permission from the photographer (or copyright holder, if different) is sufficient for use of the photo elsewhere. Usually all it takes is a quick e-mail exchange. Save a copy of your “permission” someplace in case any questions arise.

I’ve used other people’s pictures on my website and elsewhere, and rarely (more like never) have I had anyone complain. One of the more recent e-mail replies thanked me for asking, and said “you’d be surprised how many people don’t”!!! I’ve also had quite a number of contacts asking for use of my photos, some of which I was surprised that permission was even asked, as it was a “personal” use (i.e. on one’s own computer). But it’s nice for me, and I’m sure for other photographers (et al), to know that people are legitimately using my works for other purposes.
