Need "smoke" from factory smokestack

I’ve got a few buildings on my layout with smokestacks that I’d like to have the image of smoke coming out of them. I’d like a “dirty” smoke look. I tried cotton, but I’m not satisfied. Any suggestions? Thanks ahead of time!

Maybe crush up some charcoal and rub it into the cotton to darken it up?

Actually, of all the “smoke” I’ve seen, I think cotton, pulled out a bit and stretched so it goes “downwind,” is about the best. It looks better than real smoke, and doesn’t smell up the basement, either.

That smoke generator is too cool. I could put in a rectifier and change the AC to DC. I may change my plan. THANKS

We have one of those Micro-Mark smoke generators on our HO scale club layout to produce the smoke of an IRS building on fire. The smoke that comes from it is too white and wispy to be realistic, even though it is fan driven – really no better than the smoke from cheap locomotive smoke generators because it uses the same smoke oil. And remember, too, that smoke oil will leave an oily film all over everything on your layout so you will have to clean track much more often.

IMHO, you’re better off using something different, such as colored cotton, to represent smoke.

Nice.
