Hey guys, have decided on a basic N trackplan, although I have a little maneuvering room as the door I bought for the base is 2 inches wider than the original plan. This is based on a Kalmbach plan from the N Scale Model Railroading. Here is the plan:
Theirs is based in the southeast, but I live on the west coast less than a mile from the BNSF yard in Richmond CA, as well as the UP oakland yard down the road. I am modeling the modern era and so far have a BNSF GP 38 (i think, its an older kato unit I got used) and a UP GP 40. I am trying to come up with a story to make my railroad relevant out this way. I’m looking for industry ideas. I did get some hoppers, so a coal industry might be a start. There are a lot of refineries here as well, but I think that might dwarf this little layout (80"x32")
The rear passing siding I am thinking will be more or less hidden and used for storage or staging, but I would like any ideas you experts have on structure or scenery ideas, as well as maybe on operating scheme.
Same problem on the other thread you posted. Try uploading your layout plan into your web album, then post it here. See my reply to your other post for info on pictures on this forum.
Very interesting ideas, you seem to have a very nice switching challenge with that one opposite point spur.
Something you might want to think about is how you use that interchange track (is it an interchange track?), and how about staging? You can fit a nice staging yard at the top of the layout, then use the bottom spurs as 1 or 2 major indutries. Using this setup, you could have a very interesting prototypical operation.
Thanks for the input guys and thanks for the welcome icmr! To answer your question Yoshi, yes that bottom track is an exchange track. I’m kind of going for the BNSF and UP at the moment, so its and excuse to use both roads equipment.
I have fiddled with the plan a bit as the door I bought as a base turned out bigger than the original plan called for. Plus I thought the double crossover might be an interesting phot op when its all done (who knows when).
