Need suggestions for low profile slo-mo switch machines

I need to install slow motion switch machines for a yard that is directly over staging tracks, so the clearance is fairly snug. I prefer a directly-under-the-turnout application, (which in this case, rules out Tortoise). The desired specs are:

  1. slo-motion (not interested in solenoid devices),
  2. needs to be 1.5" or less in height.
  3. needs to have maintenance-free SPDT capability for frog polarity (don’t want to use the points-against-stock rails for the electrical contact).

Suggestions and opinions are invited!

Use a rod linkage and set all the switch motors in a row at the edge of the layout. Will make it easier to install, wire and maintain also.

I think you can install a Tortoise up to 12 inches away and it will still work. Is that a possibility?

Although it is listed at 2.2" in height, you might look at Micromark’s new slo-mo switch machine (http://www.ares-server.com/Ares/Ares.asp?MerchantID=RET01229&Action=Catalog&Type=Product&ID=83201).

It might work for you. A lot of the height is in the mounting bracket. You might be able to adapt it with a different mount.

Darrell, quiet…for now

Circuitron makes remote mounts for the Tortoise machines that lets you mount them on their side, at a pretty good distance from the actual turnout. So you could use the remote to put the machines between your staging tracks where they won’t interfere with the trains.
