Need the pros/cons ...

Greg,

I’m off work on Friday so I’ll try to get some pictures of the new brewery.

Fantastic, I appreciate it!

I’ve also been talking to Breezy (one of the R&N engineers) via email and he’s been a font of wisdom/information for me.

Now if I can just get myself one of those R&N green baseball caps!

Just thought of a 7-page brewery article from “More Railroads You Can Model” (1978) called “Milwaukee Road’s Beer Line” outlining the Schlitz & Pabst Breweries…

I purchased the magazine for the Pennsy’s Horseshoe Curve article, and found quite a few other good ones that I’ve come to appreciate. It was $4.50 in 1978.

The same brewery article appears in “Classic Railroads You Can Model” (2002)…

Another good mix of prototype & track plans I’ve purchased is…

“How to Build Realistic Layouts - Industries you can model” ($7.95 + free ship) which does not have a brewery article, but the articles cover a wide range of industries that tower over the spurs & yards…

The upcoming “How to Build Realistic Layouts - Freight yards” also looks quite inviting. For me, this series is becoming a “must purchase” and the pre-publication order comes in at $6.95 + free shipping.

Last but not least, is a “brewery” search at the Model Train Magazine Index…

This background could supplement the actual pictures you’ll soon be receiving.

Greg,

Here is the link to my Photobucket album. Let me know if you need further description.

Jim,

Awesome! Thank you so much for the pictures. That’s going to help immensely. Lots of great shots.

Dang I wish I lived in the area still! I’ll have to try to get out there at some point for an excursion. Breezy was telling me they are starting their passenger excursions out of Jim Thorpe again this weekend using their SD50’s.

Jim,

I tried to email you through here but not sure if it works or not - I wanted to thank you and ask you about your Reading line.

Thanks again for the pictures!

-Greg

Without reading the whole thread…

If you like ‘alternate history’, you could do this: In the late 1960s there was a proposal to create a railroad holding company, Dereco, which would buy out N&W, C&O, Reading, LV, and some of the other failing northeastern railroads. The idea was that the first two coal-haulers could bring in so much money that the parent company could afford to pay off the other railroads’ debts and infrastructure problems. Nothing much came of this in reality, although N&W did shelter E-L until Hurricane Agnes in 1972.

Suppose that Dereco had worked. This could allow LV to survive longer. Buy modern equipment and a set of paints and some decals. (This also provides an infinite supply of two-night projects to maintain interest and enthusiasm. )

Another possibility would be to model some ‘typical’ landscape and ‘typical’ industries for both lines, then switch out the details when you want to run the ‘other railroad’.
