Need to find a home for 3 orphans (Updated 3/12/08 9:45)

I recently decided to reduce my rolling stock inventory by eliminating the cars that I knew would never see daylight on my layout. I had 50 Athearn 86’ Hi-Cube box cars and sold all but 3 on that auction site, despite being listed twice at a 75% discount from the purchase price.

Rather than list them again, I want to find a good home for them by offering them for free here. I have 2 qualifications for potential owners: you must have a layout that can actually handle these monsters, and you must be willing to cover the postage to have them sent to you.

Here are the orphans that nobody wanted:

These are offered on a first come, first served based on the qualifications mentioned. Contact me via PM or email.

This is posted with approval from Bergie, so let’s keep it civil and find a new home for these cars.

Thanks,

Don Z.

Check your PM for the Wabash and the L&N one.

Can’t use them myself, but I applaud your action. [:)]

Chuck (modeling Central Japan in September, 1964 - with tunnels too small for hi-cubes)

I thought the SP one is the coolest. But no fit with me and shipping to Canada would be a bear (or beaver depending on your point of view [8D] )

Don–

They’re way out of my MR’s prototype generation, but like Chuck, I applaud your thoughtfulness. It’s very generous of you, my friend.

Tom [tup]

PS: How’s the ravine coming? The rockwork I saw that you posted the other week was mighty impressive!

T

Three questions:

  1. What scale are they?

  2. For give me, I’m not a rolling stock expert, but these would be modern day, right?

  3. How much is postage?

Packers#1,

Three answers:

  1. Go back and look at the photos…study the box. HO Scale.
  2. The SP car has a built date of 4/67.
  3. Postage would be $8.95 Priority Mail

Do you have a layout that can handle this size car? I don’t want these cars to sit on a shelf in their box. They did that for 12 years in my house. The L&N and Wabash have been claimed.

Don Z.

Tom,

I think they would look mighty fine behind one of your Yellowstones…

No progress on the ravine this week yet. I did get some wet casting done in the ravine, but still have more to go before it’s finished. Until it is colored, I don’t know if I can get a decent photo of the area. I hope to be slinging more plaster this weekend. Thanks for the kind words!

Don Z.

Dan, check PMs for the SP one.

The L&N and Wabash cars are spoken for, so they’re off the table.

Okay, here’s round 2 in the great Hi-Cube give away! I just found these cars in the train room and they need to go to good homes. All three are assembled with horn hook couplers and original plastic wheels, easily overcome. I do not have the boxes for these, but they will be packed carefully. For your consideration:

Notice the green stain on the doors. I have no idea what caused it or what it is.

And of all things, another SP unit, same road number as the first one offered:

Same terms apply. I want these cars to go to a layout where they will run…contact me through PM if you want any or all.

Don Z.

Okay, the Burlington unit is spoken for and will go to a good home with broad curves and sweeping vistas to enjoy.

Still available are the 2 SP units and the Santa Fe 8 door car.

Don Z.

PM sent.

And as stated previous, KUDOS, very generous of you.

By chance, any Conrail or Chessie? [:-^][swg]

It looks like the twin red-headed step-children (the SP units) have found a home.

The only car left is the pre-weathered [:-^] Santa Fe unit with the green stains on the doors.

PM me if you want this car…same rules apply.

Don Z.

I can’t use any, they won’t like my 22" radius curves…[xx(]

I’ve ran superdomes (6-axle truck 85 foot passenger cars)on 18s, I could use these on my new one because it’s mostly switching.

Actually, I run an autorack car, but I’m worried about those stringlining at the summit.

Stringling? you mean bottoming out, or soemthing else?

I mean tipping over inwards on my 22" curve at the summit of a 4% grade…so much power pulling it inwards, the locos pulling on one end and the rest of the train yanking on the other. Long cars are more prone to it.

I thought about getting it on the premist that it should work as well as my autorack, but then I saw the post about another train show in my area and realized I could get a more useful (able to deliver locally) car for around the same price. (shipping for this is almost $9)

Thank you for the offer![bow] Very generous!

Couldn’t use 'em. N scaler here. Thanks for answering my ?s.

Okay folks, the Hi-Cubes are officially off the non-auction block and have all been claimed by new owners. To the new owners: once you get your new cars, you need to post a photo of them in their new home…

Don Z.

Thanks to all who offered homes for my orphans. I hope they bring you great joy and revenue for your railroad.
