Most of us are switching to LEDs. 3mm is about the right size for an HO light. You will need to use a resistor in series with it. The value of the resistor depends on the kind of LED you get. If you use a bright white type, you can use 1000 ohms with 12 volts DC. If you use a golden white type, the manufacturer should tell you what value to resistor to use. I have some golden white type LEDs I got from NCE and they recommended 5000 ohms with 12 volts DC.
How messy the installation is depends on the wiring and modeling skills that you have.
