After a 12 year hiatus, I am getting back into the hobby. In going through my old issues of Model Railroader, I have found that I am missing the February 1982 issue. The worst part of that is that it has the first part of a pair of articles on how to build the Pioneer Zephyr from Athearn kits. I have the second part, but not the first! Can anyone help? I need either to get the entire magazine, or just a copy of the article. Thanks in advance for any and all help, Morpar
The Feb 82 issue is still available and can be purchased on this site or by contacting MR by phone. The price on this site is $4.95.

I totally missed that article. The Zephyr was a unique train, how would you do that out of standard kits? I might want a copy of those articles, but this seems like a pretty big job. What do they use? Especially as the Zephyr was articulated, meaning two cars shared one common truck, under the diaphragm.
Or, is this a “throw away the bodies and use the motor and front truck” sort of a deal?

No, it wasn’t that bad. Since I haven’t gotten the first article yet, I don’t remember what all it takes. I do know that you modify various Athearn passenger cars to match the Zephyr. Most of that was in the part I don’t have, but is on the way! I think it uses the top of the nose of an F-unit for the headlight, then build up the rest of the shovel nose from styrene. Hopefully, I will have the Feb. '82 MR here by the weekend. After I get it, I will let you know what it takes.
As pupular and important as the zephyr was, I have often wondered why there are not more models of it available (besides the very rare and expesive japanese ones) I would like to know what issue the second part is in, I would like to model it also. I am in to streamliners of all eras from the original steam engines up to todays high speed bullet trains.
Thanks

February and March 1982 MR had the two articles. I already had the March issue, so I ordered the February one on Monday or Tuesday and got it in the mail today (Thursday)!
Thanks for the info. I will probably order them both next week. I would like to hear how this project pan’s out for you, and possibly exchange some hints or ideas. If this is of interest, I can be contacted at karmakreations@hotmail.com
Thanks
