Needles station renovation complete
After years of neglect and start and stop construction The El Garces will finally be completed. As I passed through Needles over the last few years, I witness the progress and non-progress and it’s heartening to see the restoration of the El Garces finally be completed.
Is the building protected by high barbed wire fencing and snipers or is it possible to make a photo of it that might be published next time there is news about this facility? We all know the old adage: “A picture is worth a thousand words.”
Wonder if Amtrak.com will change its current description of the station: “Platform only, no shelter, without Wi-Fi, no parking, with accessible platform.”
It’s a happy event that El Garces will resume serving as a train station. It’s sad that this former Harvey House will not resume serving as a hotel. Alan Affeldt, who restored the La Posada Harvey House in Winslow, attempted to do likewise with El Garces, but was stymied by the Federal Transit Administration (see http://route66news.com/2014/05/02/el-garces-reopens-saturday/.) At least it won’t suffer demolition at the hands of BNSF like the Havasu Harvey House in Seligman.
