Finally after 34 years of not being used the old diesel repair shop in Nelson has been torn down. It was really an eyesore and the area looks so much cleaner.
Despite mega profits Canadian Pacific said they couldn’t afford to do it. But it has been done. So good bye and good riddance to a very decript building.
That decript building has historical significance, The Nelson Diesel shops were maintenance base for CPR’s Fairbanks Morse fleet, once the FM units were retired most of the shops were closed. Service tracks were used up until most of the southern lines were abandoned in thelate 1980’s. Sad to see it go, it would make a good museum.
Not in the condition it was in for several years. It had been vandalized for too long to be rebuild as a museum. Now the old rail passenger station can be restored as a musem of sorts. Or at least part of it as plans are being pursued to put the Chamber of Commerce or B.C. Tourism into it. That is worth doing.
The train station looks as if it’s on it’s last leg, could probably build a new replica cheaper than restoring that poor neglected station, BUT don’t count on any restoration, have they started yet? do they have the money? has anything been done? these schemes seem to start off great guns then----boom, it’s now a gravel parking lot.
Point well taken, Tatans. I’ve been in Nelson since late 04 and nothing has been with the old rail station though there has been talk of restoring it and using for business purposes. I’ve seen the odd person taking measurements of the outside perimeter of the old rail station and a person or two coming in and out it. But that is about it. So I will believe it when a open for buisness sign goes up and people come and go out of the building.
Check out the Photo of the Week (June 22-?). The Diesel shop under discussion is the building behind the 8708. I think the end cab switcher is the only non FM unit in the photo, or as Kootenay Central would say the only non OP (opposed piston) diesel in the bunch. Hopefully Train Boy will see his namesake units. The units were retired and the shop closed in 1975.
