New 1:48 tanks at Wal Mart

Just picked up these 1:48 scale babies this morning, $5.97.

My only gripe: They have rivets - not screws that hold the plastic base to the tank.

In the background are some of those 1:50 scale GMC box trucks that Diecast Direct has been blowing out for $9.99 each. Bought three for re-painting.

Hey, tanks BK!

1:48, huh? Wow, I don’t think I’ve ever seen any actual O scale vehicles in any store. They look cool, too.

Tanks for da tip. If the Germans left over from WWII ever decide to invade the Jumijo, I’ll know where to find them, I guess.

Jim

The box also illustrated a 1:48 scale Hummer with TOW missile, an OH58 (?) hellychopper which they ran a few years back, and a German WW2 Wirbelwind anti-aircraft tank (armor sides with four anti-aircraft guns on a rotating base), and a Kubelwagen combat car.

When they ran this line a couple of years ago the boxes illustrated a couple of items that I never saw - an M-113 APC was one of them - and I’m not sure if they were made. The same might be the case here.

I’ll probably repaint’em into Pennsy and NYC and re-enact the Battle of Horseshoe Curve.

“They have rivets - not screws that hold the plastic base to the tank.” Yes, but how many rivets–enquiring rivet counters want to know!

I see Bob likes to play with toys too. Must be a hard job running trains all day and now playing with tanks and trucks. [:-^]

I’ve seen them at Wal Mart but only want to get an American tank. Which tank is that?

I’ve had good O gauge luck at Wal Mart. Ertle 1:50 series John Deere construction for about $12.00 each: road grader, excavator, construction payloader, and they just added back into the mix the smaller catapillar and a loader backhoe. Near there is the Bigtime Muscle series 65 Shelby Cobra which is a “little” under scale, a new Corvette which is also a “little” under scale. And close by is the Maisto pullback cars and trucks for about $3.33. What I have found so far are a black 1:46 shortbed 92-96 F150 (I have 4 so far) and a bright red 1:47 Dodge pickup SRT10 (I have one so far). The undersides of the Dodge and Ford trucks have the 1:46 and 1:47 molded into them. There are about 20-30 of the Maisto pullback cars, trucks and SUVs. Some of the other ones might be close to 1:48 but I have not investigated them.

The only American tanks I’ve ever seen there were 1:32 and larger. Seems like a Sherman tank would be a natural companion!

For more, do a search under 1:50 john deere. I forgot the Athearn farm tractors, they have at least 8-10 models including a 4 wheel drive with duals on it. I also have about a dozen Hot Wheels ATVs.

If you look around Solido made a great series of American Aromor from WWII and the early 50s. I know of a Sherman tank, M-7 Priest, M-10 Tank Destroyer, Halftrack, and 2 different 2 1/2 ton trucks, Jeep with trailer, Self proelled gun, and one or two other vehicles. As for the Grey Tiger, Park it outside of the bank in town with a couple of scruffy looking American soldiers and a German tanker with the gun pointed at the front door of the bank…Kelly’s Heroes 40 years later

As far as loading flatcars one tank or other heavy armored vehicle per Lionel Flatcar 2 trucks or halftracks or 4 jeeps on one car a bunch of trailers on the next. Lash down loads with blackened chain and basswood strips…you dont want loads to shift

TANKS FOR THE MEMORIES!

With apologies to Bob Hope!

Are you advocating we should all go and get tanked?

Got the wirbelthingy AAA gun. I’ve started a re-paint from the tan camo to NYC Gray. I think I’ve got some HO cigar band logos that will look great on it!

Bob,

I did pick up a Tiger tank and have several of the older items they had including a Hummer that came with two soldiers. They had a D.U.K. amphibeous unit and I had purchased an american duece and a half. Wish I had more as I could re-do them as war surpluss for the layout. I make it a point to go down the “Vehicle” isle at wally world every trip. Also, check out the "clearance Isle as they often have die cast cars as well as some model paints, etc.
