New agreement keeps Michigan’s Empire Mine open

It sounds like that the taconite business is on the rebound overall, due to steel orders on the rise worldwide, including
the U.S. The “Iron Range” of Minnesota is ramping up and even
adding another taconite processing facility.

Darrell:
I agree with you and using a totally inaccurate measurement. I have been seeing many more taconite carriers on Lake Huron during the shipping season the last few years.

Good news all around.

For those that have never been there, the “UP” (Upper Peninsula of Michigan) is a railroad ‘wonderland’. Yar, lots of abandoned/inactive trackage, but some great viable lines. SPV’s Railroad Atlas “Great Lakes West”, by Mike Walker, is a definitive guide. I only discovered the “UP” twenty years ago. The denizens, called “Youpers”, are great people! They do talk funny, but… Bring your snowmobile!

I hate to be picky here but it is an IRON ORE MINE. The ore gets processed into TACONITE PELLETS. Its not a taconite mine making iron ore pellets

Say YA to da UP!
