New airbrush and weathering

I’ve seen numerous posts on weathering with an airbrush, so I went out and bought a single action and a compressor. I plan to weather with acrylics. What I need to know is:

  1. What is the optimum dilution ratio?
  2. What is the optimim pressure setting for the compressor?

I’m waiting with baited breath… LOL

A lot depends on the brand of paint, what kind of airbrush, size of needles and even the humidity in the air. Personally (because what works for me may not exactly work for others) I set the pressure around 25-30psi with a med. needle in a Badger 150. The paint I use is Polly Scale and I thin it generally around 50/50 with water or sometime I add some 70% alcohol (in the paint) to make it dry faster. I always use many light coats because one or two heavy coats look unnatural and spotted (like the shading dots used in comic books). There is some science to weathering but mostly it is an art.

If your going for a subtle effect with the acrylic, mix it 70% windex, 25% distilled water, and 5% paint. And lowering the airpressure to 7 psi. Lots of control with those settings. My airbrush is an old double action Badger 155.

Should have sprung for a double action.[2c]
What airbrush did you get?

A single action one from Airbrush City.

You don’t need double action or a fancy airbrush to get good weathering results. For most of my weathering I use a combination of airbrushing, dry-brushing and paint or ink washes. Some day I’ll get some pictures posed.
