New Athearn 1500

Has anyone gotten one of the new Athearn 1500 switchers. Am considering a couple for the club layout & would like to take a peek under the hood, first. A shell - off photo would be great ! thanks, Randy.

As per Athearn.

First batch

Due Late March, 2009

Second batch

Due Late April, 2009

Thanks Larry, I thought they were already coming out. I would like to see MRR start giving us shell-off photos in Their reviews . I prefer to look under the hood before I buy something & theres no tires to kick.[(-D]

Curious why you’d need to see the SW1500 innards. Aren’t most Athearns about the same inside? Anything special you need to see? It’s not as if it was going to have a different motor, gear tower, or electronics. Pick any other recent release and check it out, it should be the same.

I don’t own any Athearns, that’s why…

:O)

Actually Bob,I understand the SW1000 and SW1500 has a updated motor.

What, if I can be so inquisitive, are you going to be looking for when you get under there.

I remember a cartoon from many years ago. This big burly motorcycle gendarme has an MG/Triumph-style roadster pulled over. The caption reads: “I’m going to look under the hood of this thing. If I find an engine you get a ticket; if I find pedals you get a spanking and I call your mother!”

I’d like to see under the hood as well as I think Brakie is right. Athearn may put a decent motor in there.

My understanding is that Athearn has a new motor vendor and the SW1500 is the ‘trial’ goat for this motor. I wonder if the SW1500 will get the ‘Hex’ line drive as have some of the latest ‘RTR’ engines.

Jim,My sources tell me it started with the upgraded SW1000.

One can hope they are using the same motor as in the Genesis MP15AC. Those run very nice.[:D] The cabs look similar…

Thats because they are using “Sagami” motors. I had mine apart and saw the sticker.

Both the SW1000 and SW1500 comes with cab interior…I suspect the drive and motor will be similar to the Genesis MP15AC for that reason.
