New Battle Creek station opens

Based on the looks of the canopies leading trackside (can’t see much else in the photos), this stylish but simple architecture is so much better than the early “Amshacks.” Making the station inter-modal bus/rail is a good thing, too. Congrats to Battle Creek.

It’s about time! The old station was an eyesore at best. The “furnishings” were made of diamond treadplate and cracked plastic coverings. The new station has a larger waiting room with real seats and actual floor coverings instead of bare concrete. They also greatly improved the snack machine area, all new rest rooms, and a lot more windows. I ride AMTRAK several times a year and now I can’t wait for the higher speeds to Chicago and back when the line is upgraded.

Glad that they’ve finally improved that horrid station. Having lived around Battle Creek, and in the city itself for over a decade, I always hated that horrid station. Bad bathrooms, uncomfortable seating, and questionable Amtrak/Greyhound counters, anything is an improvement. Due to the diamond treadplate, bare walls, and concrete, any sound would bounce around like crazy.

Growing up in Michigan, I recall going to the Kellogg’s plant on a school field trip and the trains stopped by the former Michigan Central depot downtown. But in today’s era, intermodalizationis the way to go, and the new station is definitely an improvement over the rather cheap ugly facility they had after service was abandoned through downtown.

Glad to see the rave reviews as to replacing the “ugly” structure as described by my wife & architectural director.
Now, please, all interested should watch and comment on CN’s treatment of Amtrak trying to get through Battle Creek. I’ve seen the passengers delayed far too often through that
junction city.

The small amount of the new station shown in the accompanying photo looks good, but only for CA and FL weather. Michigan is not known for the balmy days and the blue skies in the photo. If many people are waiting for a train (and I hope for excellent patronge of all things railroad), what provisions does the station make for use in what I fear is typical Michigan weather?
