Hi everyone newbuie here. i created a massaive layout and covered it with foam. now i need grass should i use static grass mat or go and shake till my hands fall off. i would prefer the grass mat as it would look better but i have alot seams and i cant find a piece big enough. can anyone offer assitance. i also would like to know how to attach 2 or more pieces of grass to a layout going different directions . please let me know what you think
For the seems, are they glued together? If so, you can coat your layout with a layer of joint compound. Best to reinforce the joint with fiberglass also. I use used dryer sheets. Then paint the joint compound with a latex paint. You can find brown oops colors cheap. Those are mismixed colors.
As for the grass, you can make a static applicator cheap using an electrified fly swatter. There are a few tutorials online. Best to use your Google-fu and search. Then apply a blended mix of static grass on to your painted surface. Should look more realistic and be cheaper.

While ones like WoodlandScenics, etc… offer grass mat’s, they are one solid color. If you prefer that route, (it does give a green, textured “grass” look quick), I would reccommend you follow by using different colored static grass as highlights, to break up the “everything is built on golf-course grass” look.
Note: I am not bashing the grass mat’s, just pointing out that the one major flaw they have is they are way too uniform looking. And, they are not that great for the price when you need to still work them over further with more scenery items to fix the uniform appearance. However, they do come in handy for the times you just want a quick appearance of grass, with little time invested. Just expect to have to go back through and help out it’s appearance eventually. And, for the color, plaster cloth and green paint does the same effect. Still some texture, and uniform color.
One caveat: This is coming from someone who used grass mat’s for the said quick grass look, in little time. On my next layout, while the reused sections will still have the grass mat as a base, the new segments will not. I found it just added to the price, and really needs re-done later for better appearance. It will just become the base coat, like the plaster cloth with green paint will be on the new sections. And paint and plaster cloth, (if you shop around for the plaster cloth), is cheaper than grass mat’s will ever be.
Thanks tim
My layout is so big im just worried its going to talk months to apply grass. I have pics if interested
