New billboards for Sweethome

Got a parcel from the US at the weekend which included a couple of Bar Mills Billboard kits. Very nice to build - took me ages to place them on the layout for maximum effect.

I love the “Doctor Recommended.”

Me too! My doctor told me “I had to start smoking” because I was not getting enough tar.

Well, you need something to do while the leeches do their bloodletting!

That’s hysterical!![(-D][(-D]

I do too. It wasn’t until the late '50s in the US that the health risks of smoking became common knowledge. I don’t think cigarette advertising was banned on TV until the 1970s, after the famous Virginia Slims “you’ve come a long way, baby” ad campaign aimed at encouraging women to smoke aired.

Yeah I grew up in the 50’s and I still remember…Winston taste good like a…should, Call for Phillp Moris!! Its a wonder I didn’t start smoking…Cox 47

The original Surgeon General’s report, which basically told the world that smoking was so bad for you that even the tobacco industry’s lobbying money couldn’t stop the government from making the news public, was published in 1964. Banning TV and radio advertising was the next step, in 1971.

Remember Raleigh Coupons? Each pack had a coupon in it, which you could redeem for “gifts” like S&H Green Stamps. Mad Magazine parodied the “Oasis takes you away” series with “Awaysis took you away,” showing a grieving family leaving a cemetery. Their “Rolly” ad showed a guy with what he got free from smoking “Rollys,” chest x-rays of his lung cancer.

I had a Uncle who chewed Red Man…each package had a baseball card in it…go figure what age group they were going for?..I understand some of those cards are worth a lot of moey now I can remeber seeing him open a pack and throw the card away…Cox 47
