I have seen several BNSF SD40-2 units lately still painted in the old BN green and white scheme but with the front of the low noses painted a solid green and with a somewhat different logo in a very dark green (darker than the rest of the unit) with gold lettering (the logo is round). Does anybody know anything about this? I have seen more a couple over the past few weeks on the Chicago to Aurora triple track corridor. Thanks.
I’ve never seen any of these before. The closest thing to that I saw was a SD40-2 in the BN light green and white scheme. I wish I could see one:( Sorry I don’t have any web sites or anything to help u out, I have web sites on CSX exotic and current paint schemes though
As you can see by my code name, I live right by Lisle. But I have not seen this engine. Though I have been seeing alot of SLUG units on that line. So far everytime I go to that line I see a SLUG unit. And when you say the loco is “round” does that mean that the engine says round, or is that the style of the lettering? And it it is the styling of the lettering, what does it say?
They may now be owned by a leasing company.
Good guess, and we do see lots of old BN SD40-2 units lettered for some of hte leasing companies, but this one is still lettered for BNSF and has the “new” BNSF round logo on the front of the short hood. Perhaps someone will get a picture of one for us, as I am not much of a photogropher myself, just a train watcher and lover.
UPDATE. While researching this issue some more, I find that the “new” logo is not new at all, but this is simply the same logo used on the SD40-2 units repainted into the H1 scheme but applied on a 100% green low hood nose on these SD40-2’s. Perhaps they had just been repaired from some sort of collision damage or perhaps they are getting ready to retire them so BNSF did not want to give them a complete H1 paint job? Only speculation on my part.
