According to U. S. Environmental Protection Agency public documents, the pending addition of 15.9 miles (Keenbrook-Summit) of third track over Cajon Pass includes a new double-crossover at ALRAY, a location midway between the present Cajon and Summit crossover points.
Presently, between Cajon and Summit, the two tracks follow separate alignments, 2.2% and 3% gradients respectively. The new third track would follow the 2.2% right-of-way.
Up until the early 1970’s, ALRAY was a siding location. When the third-track is completed, ALRAY will again be an important timetable location, and give dispatchers great operating flexibility.
