New CSX intermodal train

CSX seems to have reconfigured their intermodal trains.

I195 and I196 are new - Chicago to Savanah, Ga via Cumberland, Md and then south on former SCL.

I135/136 no longer run Chicago to Suffolk, Va but are paired from NWO to Suffolk.

I141/142 previously ran from NWO to Atlanta, perhaps Florida. Now it runs from Louisville to Wallbridge with dropping off of intermodal at NWO and continue to Wallbridge with Auto Racks.

If anyone else has more detailed info, would appreciate it.

Interesting about the Chicago Savanah pair. Quite a lengthy route, but it appears this is a train with quite a few blocks of traffic. Today’s 195 (Chicago - Savanah) had about 250 containers with about 120 domestics when passing Deshler.

My guess is that CSX has some ‘Big Gang’ (Tie & Surfacing, Curve Patch and Rail Replacement Gangs) track work taking place on the routes through Nashville and Atlanta, thus they are rerouting segments of traffic so they don’t run into the Curfews that are in place to facilitate the track work.

What percentage of the track work would be done by CSX employees as opposed to contractors?

If the railroad wanted the work done at night, would it have to pay more than having it done during the day?

When I was working - the Gangs were all company employees, today I don’t know. When big gangs are in operation, they normally get 12 to 14 hours of track time - day or night. The reality is that you CANNOT operate 24 hours of traffic over any segment of railroad in 10 to 12 hours with speed restrictions on the miles of track that were worked on without seriously codlocking that entire line segment.

During the 1990’s CSX tried to run Big Gangs all over the property without setting up any kind of systemwide Curfew Plan. The only thing the ‘willy nilly’ application of the Big Gangs did was waste both track time and gang time. Eventually the Curfew System was adopted, where the Schedules and Classifications of trains were rerouted, changed or redesigned as necessary to afford MofW the track time necessary for their gangs to accomplish their goals. Schedules & Classifications or trains in the Operating Plan are changed weekly to facilitate the coming weeks’ work.

It is traffic that used to run via I025 and I029 to Atlanta, that connected to the train to Savannah. Both 25 and 29 and their northbound counterparts I026 and I028 have been running maxed out on length restrictions, and CSX has had to turn business away as a result. The new train has freed up space on both of them. The southern route out of Chicago gets very congested south of Evansville, all the way to Atlanta, hence the east routing of I195.

It sure is nice when the “left” hand knows what the “right” hand is doing. When operations get really big, silo mentality sets in. Someone HIGH up needs to make sure this does NOT happen = GOOD leader. endmrw0606251934

I195 passed Deshler at 1447 today with about 233 containers…several blocks.

It then pass Fostoria at 1709 with about 298 containers. Obviously it did quite a bit of work at NWO. Also of note…quite a few JBH containers among the domestics. Typically JBH is handled by NS primarily in the east, but it appears CSX is offering service to points NS cannot handle.

I know that CSX was offering service the CCX the intermodal facility in Rocky Mount, NC but that traffic was moving via M370 east of Cumberland. Not sure if that has changed. There is a new webcam at Mance, Pa…will check it out.

Good to see growth in intermodal.

Is NWO/North Baltimore up to closer to design capacity since after the Harrison era?
