New DCC question??

I heard from many of my friends that when you have a sound locomotive on the track you can throttle the engine up without making the locomotive run around.
Such as having the loco in 8 notch and the loco itself may only be running at like 10 or 20 miles per hour. I would like to learn how to do this.
Does any one know how? I have the Digitrax empire builder and the right throttle to make this happen, I just need to learn.

James

I heard somthing like that
it was for control of the sound in dc mode
you used the foward back switch to change the sound
I have the older digitraxx and have no control with my older mrc 2000

James,

I’m not entirely sure what you mean by “having the loco in 8 notch”. Are you talking about “008” on the speed step?

Tom

Soundtrax dxf decoders have this feature. I believe it is called ‘manual notching’.
In essence, the loco prime mover is notched up with a function key which is then independant of the motor speed control.

James,
You might be talking about ‘Manual Notching’. The idea is the operator controls the engine sound and speed independently. You can rev up the engine to notch 7-8 when hauling a heavy load up a hill, but the train is only moving 10-20 mph. On the Soundtraxx DSD100LC decoders this is controlled by CV116. When you use the ‘Manual Notching’ you also have to assign different functions to the (recommended) F5 and F6 keys. The whole procedure is outlined on page 27 of the DSD100LC Manual. I don’t know if the other manufacturers provide this ability and I can’t determine if it is available on the DSX decoders. I have tried it with the DSD100LC decoder equipped locos on my layout and it works. I prefer the automatic notching since my layout is flat and loco response is relatively linear.
