Very interesting!

In the late nineteenth century, Baldwin built some beautiful engines, and some that were seriously ugly. That switcher probably needed the weight of the sand aft to partially balance the front overhang.

That temporary-looking trestle, and the ‘handle’ of empty freight cars, look like something a novice model railroader would put together. I especially like the ‘look’ of the boxcar that’s right at the foot of the grade.

Too bad the “L” engines are barely visible at the extreme left.

Strange but true. That’s a very interesting picture. Nice find.

I have always wondered if that flange on that variety of stack has any functional purpose. That so called “cap stack” or “flange stack” was very common as a transition from the spark arrestor stacks to the shotgun stacks.

It appears the loco must have been pushing in reverse much of the time as there does not seem to be any sand pipe to the front drivers. Possibly this was the only way to get locos and rolling stock up to the elevated line. Also, see a couple water tanks at the top. Maybe the water tanks on the elevated line were used to fill the loco tanks at this time. You would want minimum loco weight during the push. A WAG.
