Are the new EMD’s proving to be good dependable locomotives? Are they selling ?
Which new EMDs? The New Joule Battery Electric? The Tier 4 engines? They had teething issues, but it seems like they’re in use now. I think EMD’s bigger problem is that the railroads just aren’t buying many locomotives at all and they aren’t very enamored of either of the Tier 4 engines on offer. the GE’s seem to have sold more, because they went on sale first. The F125, Metrolink seems finally satisfied with these engines, but nobody else bought them. Again, with Metra looking for Battery power and rebuilding old (EMD) units, new Tier 4 just isn’t in the cards. They’re suffering from the market.
Seeing a lot of the T4s painted yellow or black with Progress Rail markings.
I haven’t seen any, but the lease fleet did grow bigger than originally planned. Again, that’s less to do with loving or hating the engine and more to do with the wait the entire locomotive market is. I’m also hard pressed to call the SD70-T4 “New” anymore. It’s 5 years old. There are locos that EMD made that weren’t even produced for 5 years.
KCS has been using 50 yellow EMD SD70-T4 units.

PSR more than anything has depressed new locomotive sales.
CP also has six SD70ACe-T4 locomotives on lease.
