new engine

Westport Terminal RR has got a new engine.

This engine is made by Atlas, old run. I’ve installed an ESU loksound micro.

WT 8 is named after Albert Abraham Michelson, the first American physicist who received the Nobel Prize in science. All WT engines have got names from physicists. [:)]

And the numbers have something to do with math.

Wolfgang

The numbers have to do with math? Confusing…[%-)]

Named after phycisists… could be tricky. Nice model though.

WT 2
Shay PFM UNITED; with light and smoke
WT 4 “J.Henry” GE 44-ton Keystone; with sound
WT 8 “A.A.Michelson” Alco RSD-4/5 Atlas, sound
WT 11
RDC Athearn; new gearing, sound
WT 16 “A.G.Bell” EMD NW 2 Kato; light
WT 21
RDC Athearn; new gearing
WT 128 “T.A.Edison” GE U 25 B Stewart / Kato
WT 256 “B.Franklin” GE U 25 B Stewart / Kato
WT 512 “R.A.Millikan” EMD GP 35 Kato; with sound
WT 1024 “A.H.Compton” EMD GP 25 Kato; with sound
WT 2048 “H. A. Rowland” Alco RSD-15 LifeLike 2000; with sound

The next engine is in the box, RS-11 undec

Wolfgang

Nice work.

Will that old shay be named the “Isaac Newton”?

Bill

So, the next one will be 4096? [:)]

Hmmm, I never considered these practical/engineering people like Mr. Franklin, Bell, or Edison to be physicists. But if you are going to include people like this as physicists - I think you need a George Westinghouse, Elisha Gray, and especially a Nikola Tesla. No? I consider physicists to be people who have added to the theoretical base line equations like Newton, Einstein, & Hawkins.

My freelance railroad locomotives all carry prime numbers, but the names have no pattern. The crews get to choose their own names. One of my prior layouts had towns named after scientists. Then I read an article in MRC where a fellow had done the same thing, so I abandon the idea on the next layout.

You may want to call R.J. Corman… the 3rd axle of your front truck is on the ground… [:-^]

Wolfgang, it is a very nice engine, one which I feel you have done a nice job of finishing. Nice touch on the trucks, especially.

@ Arjay1969

yes, #4096 will one of the next engines. But there’re two undec in boxes. A RS-11 will become #32 and a GP 35 #64 before.

@Texas Zepher

Franklin, Bell, or Edison physicists lived long before Mr Nobel. But at school I’ve told the pupils a lot about these scientists. Unlike Ernest O. Lawrence who got the Nobel prize, Tesla never got it. But his name is written in “stone” with the unit Tesla.

I simple wanted to remember of famous American physicists every pupil will have read from and choose to take Nobel prize if possible.

Wolfgang

Today I finished this engine, ALCO RSD-5.

I replaced the bulbs with LEDs, installed a working beacon light and a Loksound micro decoder. I used not the attached speaker but a 20 mm speaker which I glued into the shell.

My HOW TO is at my TrainBoard Blog.

Wolfgang

Last summer (in July), you posted a roster where all numbers were powers of 2 (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024 and 2048).

I see you have started a new series of RDCs with numbers that doesn’t fall into the powers-of-two number series - like 11 and 21. What naming pattern are you going to use for the RDCs?

Btw

Dein Lokomotive sieht sehr gut aus! Die namen der Lokomotiven gefallen mir auch. Ich finde sie sehr findig und interessant!

Tschuess!

Only the diesels have true powers of 2. And I’ve tried to be now more chronological with the names. Van Allen didn’t get the Nobel Prize.

Wolfgang

That’s a great idea. It’s better than naming them after politicians!

Makes sense. So how about those RDCs, then ?

You could start a separate series of names for them. RDCs - Budd RDCs ? One of them has number 21 - legal age for drinking quite a few places.Maybe you should name them for German sounding American beer brands (like Bud and Pabst) ? [:)]
