Basically, taking them is plagarism.
Sure, we can do models, though thats why we already have Weekend, Midweek, and any other Photo Funs.
We can still even do the prototypes, these just have to be your own photos.
Hot linking, while frowned upon, is not plagarism.
Hot linking them to a forum for the purpose of asking a question or showing something, especially when the source is noted does not violate copyrights.
Just so you know, hot linking is linking an image with [img] tags so it appears within the text of the message.
Using them on your personal website or claiming they are yours is a different matter.

I will second photos.nerail.org this is a great site comprising of photos from all over New England, also has a North American sister site. I have posted several photos from the Portland Maine area. Wonderful resource to keep up on the local trains here in New England (Mostly Guilford, CSX, NS and P & W)
