Does anyone model New England and what is your layout like[?] I have been to Boston and really liked the scencery. I am thinking about building a Boston & Main micro layout and was wondering what it is like modeling New England.

Allen Keller Productions produced two “Excellent” videos on New England area based layouts. They’re:
Volume 6: *** Elwell’s Hoosac Valley RR.
Volume 2: Franklin and South Manchester.
Regardless of your scale, you will pick up some great ideas from these. Hope this helps!

Past issues of MR have presented some exceptional layouts that are based on New England prototypes. Some of them are freelanced, yet represent the geography and scenery of New England. The most recent issue has an article on the Franklin and South Manchester of George Sellios. It represents New England and is, in my opinion, without equal. I am certain you can find numerous articles in MR by browsing their index.

I’m modeling the Green Mountain Railroad, which is a shortline that runs from Bellows Falls VT to Rutlnad VT. I also live in the greater boston area, with a vacation home in southern vermont, and wouldnt want to live anywhere else. Because i live in the area it is easy for me to gather prototype information, and scenery pictures. If you would like any pictures of scenery or anything, i would be more then happy to help.
I model the Canadian National intermodal line with the interchange to guilford system.My mainline is from halifax to ayer with my main focus on New Brunswick.I use mostly a shelf style layout I find it cheaper and it looks cool if you have a hill from the wall to the mainline.Good luck building your layout
I model the Maine Central. I live near Bath, Maine. The MEC had a branch that goes through Bath on it’s way to Rockland. I remember the MEC as a kid, so I chose to model the late '70s through present day. When it is done I will be able to add and remove landmarks that have vanished or appeared anywhere along that timeline, so I don’t have to model strictly 1 era!! I grew up in Western Mass. and I seem to remember waiting for the train to go by in West Springfield. I’m guessing it was Conrail, but can anyone tell me for sure. I’m thinking of recreating my youth…

Another New England-prototype layout covered in an Allen Keller video is Paul Dolkos’s Boston & Maine New Hampshire Division. I saw this video recently and it does a great job on one of the nicest layouts I’ve seen anywhere. You can also do a keyword search on “Dolkos” on the Model Train Magazine Index and find several “Model Railroader” articles featuring Paul’s layout and his modeling.

I believe another Keller video covers the area, too. That is the one on the Carabasset and ??? Valley narrow gauge layout of Bob Hayden, IIRC.
If not, get it any way, I’ts a good watch!, as most of Mr. Keller’s videos are, IMO.
