New European SD70M2s on duty

Hello all ;

Here’s a video depicting EMDs Euro 4000s on duty,. The 1st train is a paper train from Zaragoza in Spain, to Lisbon (Bobadela Yard) in Portugal. The second seems to be a test with both units MUed. It was a big one. Hope you like it.

Thanks for the post, it is weird because they don’t look at all like anything we have but sound just like a regular EMD unit.

These are very similar in appearance to the Class 67 locos used in Britain which were made at the same plant in Spain. These Euro-SD70M2 are Co-Co rather than Bo-Bo and I believe are physical wider and taller too; out of the gauge for Britain.

That’s right.

This specyfical design was made with european continental (or UIC) loading gauge in mindIn fact, only the inhards are EMD. All the rest is the work of european locomotive builder Vossloh (just notice the trucks, they’re quite different from american SDs) . Most of these Euro 4000s built up untill now are also broad guage, working in the iberian peninsula for several operators. In fact, and in order to be fully compatible with all of the Peninsula’s broad gauge railroads, these engines have 2 different cab signaling systems, and also 2 radio systems.

How the heck could you make out what type of trucks were under those engines??? What did that engineer well out?

“get off my lawn.”

Here’s another video depicting these enines details

Yuck.

Very good video!

Where was this taken? Where is Comas?
I was shocked that "Hook & Loop couplers are still being used.
I thought Europe converted to a type of Knuckle so a person did not have to be between cars any more.
I was also surprised how slim the crew access doors are.
Again a geat video.

OH MY GOD! I do not know how I came across this video. I linked some how viewing one of the videos mentioned here.

It is “LUXX” the largest model RR in Berlin, Germany.

Again all I can say is, “OH MY GOD.” It is the greastest layout I ever seen.

I am applying for a passport and going there. To see it first hand.

Hello ;

This video was filmed in Lisbon’s Santa Apolonia station in Lisbon, Portugal, during the certification tests of this loco.

The Hook & Look couplers, although being quite an outdated system, is still the standard in Europe,. exception made for railcars, wich normally use fully automatic coupling systems, such as Schaferrnberg or Dellner types (in EMUs and DMUs special drawbars are used between their own vehicles), and special purpose trains, such as TGVs. There are also some very few freight trains that use semi-automatic AAR type couplers, in wich the maxiimum resistance of an european type couple - 3600 metric tons - isn’t enough. There have been, it the past some atempts to creat an auto coupler, but without any success

Finally, Comsa is an european private freight operator company, that works togheter with Takargo (another operator) in the Iberian Penisula. Main traffic, up untill now is containers.

Plus some freights in Germany, Holland and Sweden at least, use Russian style couplers. Even TGV trains do use the hook and buffer type couplers.

I haven’t heard that term before “hook + look”.
