I don’t know what all the fuss is about this new forum. I find that it is just as easy as the old one was. I follow the instructions and every thing works just fine. I think the new forum is more attractful than the old one. It’s like me changing to DCC, You have to learn how to use it. Comments are more than welcome for and against. [:D]
I actually kinda like it. the two things I hate about it are that the “My forums” button is gone (I loved that feature) and the silhoutte displayed if someone doesn’t have an avatar.
What’s missing are the jump options at the bottom of the page. When you make a post, you have to scroll all the way back to the top to get back to the forum. At the very least there should be a “goto top of the page” option. Idealy, the bread crumbs at the top of the page should be repeated at the bottom (as was the case on the old forum). And you also can’t right-click and cut and paste, which is much more efficient than having to go up to the toolbar, first to cut, then again to paste. Oh, and the smileys are covering the text of the line under them.
The new format works fine for me. Since I have been using Trains.com forums I have used keyboard commands. I highlight text, ctl x, or ctl c or ctl v. Works very well. It is called adapting to a new situation. People can adapt if they choose to. If you choose, will not adapt, don’t rant. When I do not like something, I get some Cheese to go with my Whine.
Well this is 4th or 5th change to this forum in the last 10 years I’ve been here. I still see the same people getting on as I did when I started many years ago. So whats the fuss. Its like switching to DCC from DC, I’m going to make the switch so everyone else are going to have to make the switch here too.
The main factor in whether a photo has to be enlarged here is dependent on your parameters you have set up on your Photobucket account (I’m assuming you use Photobucket). Go to your album and look in the “Upload Images & Video” box. At the bottom of the box you should see a drop-down menu for the size of file you want your original reduced to. I use the 1024x768 17" screen option. Of course, if you’re uploading a small image, it still won’t enlarge here on the forum if it doesn’t exceed the file size you choose on Photobucket.
My commentary was not a rant, merely my early observations upon using the new forum. I don’t see anything wrong with critiquing (not critisizing) a new product, we do it all the time when we look to purchase a new loco or somesuch.
After I’ve made a post I just click my back key three times and I’m back on the forum page, and the page is already reloaded so I don’t have to refresh it.
Quite honestly, I see mainly another change simply for change sake and some added benefit to the advertisers, rather than any great improvement to the site’s function. In fact, what I consider the only useful and valuable portion - the posts themselves - have now been significantly curtailed by all the added and to my mind wasted space on each page. This has been done in MR several times in recent years, most notably with the Trackside Photos page and at least some readers did protest (column size has also shrunk decidedly).
I’ve been here since well before the actual MR forums, as we know them today, began and the original versions were just as utilitarian and informative without all the flash and glitz that today so often takes the space that would be much better served by more useful text and images.
Are they going to be adding “My Forums” back? Geez, I really used that, and counted on it as some advice forums that I valued were “stored” there - could get to them easily and I knew were they were. Why would they eliminate useful functionality?
COOL![8D]Thanks Don!
Wait. Now it’s NOT working. Hmmm…Do you guys see the resize option on that pic? Now I’m just getting a full size (large) pic on my screen.
I find the New Forum just as fast and even more useful ! Did the “Model Railroader.com Sites Index” (at the end of the posted Replies), exist on the Old Forum. Being able to review any article in MR 2004-2008 is great ! You enlarge pictures by clicking “on the image”, rather than the way you do it on the New Forum. To reduce the full screen enlarged picture, you click on the X in the upper right, rather than “Close” (in the upper left). Bob Hahn
