Is it me, or is exclusivity within a specialized hobby a little strange? I never got the Teen Railroad Place over on the Trains.com part of the forum. Now the teenaged crowd is refining themselves even more so?
There’s a line in the National Geographic Special Love Those Trains, that goes something like this (please excuse the paraphrasing…I’m away from my copy of the show): “Theirs is a worldwide fraternity with no membership requirements beyond sharing in the love of trains.”
I don’t know…having never been in any really exclusive clubs or anything (I never even made it into the Model RR club in Illinois because I couldn’t deal with the polotics of a micro-organization), I guess I’ve always just gravitated to less specialistic scopes. I like trains so I hang out here. I like cameras, so I hang out at DPReview. I’m not sure what bearing age would have in either instance that would require me to join a specialized microcosm of fellow afficionados.
Maybe the best way to figure it out is just to form my own specialized club, and see what it’s like. Anybody up to join the Society of Railroad Photographers in their Twenties?
Yeah, but this is the internet, it connects billions of people together, and you’d be surprised the niche groups that can form. Even if there’s only 1 person in each state that still makes a group of 50, and internationally there may be hundreds of them, sure not a group big enough to change the world, but still…
Could I join the SoRPitT twice?
Of course! You may also choose the “29 and Holding” membership if that would suit you better! [;)]
OK, apparently this was a bad idea to post this. Wonderful!
