Hello people. I’m new to trains so please be patient with me. Santa brought me an empire in a box last Christmas and I plan to become a tycoon [:D] with your kind help and guidance, of course.[:I]
Mike,
Welcome to the forum! Good to have you on board! [:)] Fire away your questions, whenever they come to mind.

Ask away. I quickly learned that any question that one can think of can be answered by someone (sometimes many) on this forum. It’s simply amazing the amount of massed knowledge and experience here and the willingness to share.
There is a down side though. You’ll ask a question that seems to be impossible to answer and you’ll see posts describing several solutions! Of course it’s always better to pick the wheel that works best for you rather than having to reinvent the thing!
I got my start that way as well. There are lot’s of great people who are willing to help out here. Just remember that there are no stupid questions.
fire away with any question you like and we will help
One of the anwers that comes frequently, especially to new folks, is to do a lot of preparatory reading. It might seem like a brush-off, but that is the collective wisdom here; there really is little substitute for getting a couple of good books, maybe a few article re-prints from Model Railroader magazine, and then begin the arduous task of negotiating with us [:D] as to how your layout will work.
Yeah, we ‘negotiate’ pretty much everything on this forum…like, how much and when to talk about any political or economic aspects of our hobby, the best locos, layouts, books, kit manufacturers, turnouts, and so on. it’s fun, and often very entertaining.
Welcome, Mike. [#welcome]
That’s very good advice. That’s how I’ve learned a lot of my acquired knowledge of the hobby. I have a collection of Model Railroaders, Railroad Model Craftsman, Model Railroading, you name it. I have a lot of magazines, dating to 1941 I believe. Reading is the best thing you can do, because you’ll find out at least two ways to do the same thing, and then you can choose which way you like best.
I’ve been a member of this forum for about a year and a half, I believe, and I have learned a lot, and everyone on here is always nice and polite about it, no matter what you ask, so, feel free to ask anything, and everything you might need or feel the urge to.
