New Guy

[:)] I am just starting out re-kindling this hobby from when I was a kid. I am currently building my table in a 12x14 foot area. I am researching DCC controls and was wondering if anyone had some sound advice on a reccomended unit to start with that is expandable and con control 4-5 locos. I’d also like to be able to control sound and accessories too. I’ve read about the MRC Prodigy Advance and NCE PH Pro. If anyone has some reccomndations, I’d appreciate it,

Thanks, FC2SW

you will have a good start there, Digitrax have a more flexible system with a lot of features.

For a quick start Bachmanns EZDCC will do ya OK.

You will get people recommending every set that there is. And they will all be right. It is all is good advice. I don’t think there are any bad systems being produced today. 4-5 locos is within the range of all the current systems. The only advice I will give is that with sound you will want a controller/throttles that have more than 4 function keys.

I have Lenz, Digitrax, and MRC systems. Love them all. My wireless throttles are CVP. I love them. I have decoders from NCE, Digitrax, Soundtraxx, Lenz, MRC and haven’t had any serious problems with any. I did have one spat with Soundtraxx support but once again nothing serious.

Compared to the command control of 1979 this stuff has much more flexibility, is cheap, easy to install, and easy to use.

Good responses so far. Everyone has their favourite, so you still will be left with a choice after they peter out. Many use Digitrax Zephyr, many use the MRC Prodigy and the Advanced version, Lenz, MCE, Easy-DCC, and so on. Each has its “packages” and their inherent design and architecture limitations. You would be well advised to seek out a local club, especially if you are inclined to join them, and see what they run and what they have to say. Then, if you are still keen, get what they have.

Shop around. You can get some real deals on ebay.
