new guy

hi im new here and to trains. My name is george and I am Building a 6’ x 6’ HO layout and Adam, cheese3, is helping me. I also have some old american flyer trains i would like to do something with one day. I hope to learn alot from everyone. Adam says this is a really helpful place. Well here are some pictures of adam doing some construction.

Welcome Big Buck.

What is the grade on your layout? It looks very steep

Not sure, adam would know. Almost forgot a picture of me

GREETINGS TO ALL. I too am a new guy to this but well aged.As a youngster I ran American Flyer. (9 units on 10x12 layout) Now have the desire to go to a more realistic setup. Planing on HO. So far things look “decent” on all my paper plans. The plan is to establish a short-line freelance (based from the PRR & WM that once ran through our town.) I presently have only a few items I purchased at train shows.

“I have the opportunity to “maybe” purchase some used materials, equipment, buildings, scenery, etc. from another senior citizen that is getting ready to go to some other location and he does not want, nor have the room for a display. He asked me to come to his home a see what he has to offer. IF HE REQUESTS ME TO OFFER HIM A PRICE FOR THE WHOLE LOT, I will be floored. No idea how to estimate such an offer. Only information I have is he has been in the hobby for over 25 years. Can anyone offer suggestions as to how I would handle this transaction?”

Thank you everyone that can be forward and honest. Old man want’s to know.

Its about a 6% grade however i left room for sanding and shaping the foam it will be smaller when finished.

Oh no!

More proof that model railroading isn’t dying! [;)]

Welcome to the hobby!

Craig

Thank you. i am open for any advice or ideas that any one has.

For a beginner, the best and simplest advice I can give is this:

The quality of your track work and the size of your curve radii in particular will affect everything you do in the future with your layout and how much enjoyment you get out of it.

Craig

OK, for starters, cut that grade down to under 3%. Unless your planning on running geared steam and only pulling 3 cars at a time. 6% is really too steep.[2c]
Other than THAT…[#welcome]

You should post your question as a new topic.

It is not polite to horn in on someone else’s topic.

Like I said the grades will be cut down,I left room to shape and get them leveled.
