New here and have a question about SCL.

Hi all…New here to this forum.First timer to post on a R/R board.Typically I post on scale auto forums but had to asked the historical train experts a question.

I want to build a 1/24th scale model of a SCL service truck from the 60’s for a friend.I would ask him for the info. but I want project to be a complete surprise when finished. All I know is that his dad drove a yellow service truck for SCL during the 60’s.He was a mechanic/machinist and worked on the SCL engines.

Any links, photos and info will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
MackYates

I know in the Hamlet area of SCL back in the 70’s the trucks i saw were green. And on the CRR in Bostic the trucks were yellow.

If your friend’s dad worked for SCL during the 1960s, it’s likely that a yellow truck might have been inherited from one of the predecessors, SAL or ACL.

I’d suggest that you try the Atlantic Coast Line and Seaboard Air Line Railroads Historical Society:

http://www.aclsal.org/

(The Trains home page has the link to this and other similar groups.)

Good luck!

Shure hope ACL’s were not purple.

Mack,

Most of these historical societies are run by volunteers, who may not have more than a few hours a week to devote to them. Very few have actual offices or archives to aid in their research. Your question is not necessarily going to be an easy one to answer–you can’t just go to a timetable or historical treatise and find out about truck colors. If they don’t have someone they can think of to ask this question to, they’ll probably make a request for information in their publication–which, if it’s typical of these historical societies, is published quarterly. This is going to take them some time.

I’d try the library, or interlibrary loan, for books about the SCL and its predecessors.

If you look at photos of locomotives in the yards, there will probably be a company truck in a few of the photos.

This might be easier than trying to find photos of a signal maintainer or section crew truck.

(Neat gift idea you’re working on.)

I realize it’s not common to seek and find a specific color for a past R/R service truck.I knew it was a shot in the dark.I may contact the town where he worked and see if thay have a city historical museum. Most towns do.

Thanks for all the replies.

Wouldn’t that be purple and silver with a gold pinstripe. Make a handsome pick-up truck.[2c]
