New HO and S Vehicles at Wal-Mart

The Reel Rides have started arriving at Wal-Mart. Offered in both 1/87 and 1/64 scales, they are based on famous movie vehicles like the 1967 Plymouth Belvedere convertible from “Tommy Boy,” the 1970 Pontiac GTO Judge and 1972 Chevrolet C-10 pickup from “Dazed and Confused,” 1958 Porshe 356A from “Top Gun” and the 1977 Pontiac Trans Am from “Smokey and the Bandit.”

Right now, the only studios involved are Universal and Paramount so don’t expect the “Bullitt” Mustang, the James Bond cars or all the lovely American cars from “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.” On the other hand, we might get the DeLorean from “Back to the Future” or the Bluesmobile.

The models are produced at High Speed and marketed through Malibu International, so the models should be very nice.

Fond memories of the GTO Judge. A “tire frying” factory hot rod. Good to see more cars from the 60s and 70s are coming available.

Bill, on another note…any possibility of someone producing that Trailways Eagle O-1 coach that I brought up last year? Those puppies were running all over the U.S from the late 50s thru the early 70s. The major spotting difference between the O-1 and the Eagles built after it was the rear window.

If ANYBODY is willing to pick up a few of the 77 Trans Ams in HO scale and send them to me I would really appreciate it. I’m a HUGE Trans Am fan and own both a real 77 SE(The Bandit) and a 78. We don’t get much new stuff up here in Canada. Just tell me where to send the cash.

Thanks for the info. I could use some S-10’s and TA’s. We only got the 1/64 Cherries here. Hopefully we’ll get the HO versions of these. Do they have normal paint jobs or are they like the Easter Island vans?

BTW, I got a killer KW conventional sleeper cab tractor in HO at Walmart tonight. 3 and a half bucks…gotta love it!

I plan on Walmarting this weekend and if the Walmarts here in Topeka and KC have any, I will be more than glad to pick up a few extras. Let me know what is needed. I would like some of the S10s

Before you get too excited, they are the C-10 and not the S-10. You can see them in the link Mark posted above. Still nice vehicles tho.

I managed to pick up one of Malibu’s Land Rover Discover 3 from the GTE show in KC MO but, nothing from my Walmarting in Topeka tonite. I think I will try Walmarts website

I just bought 3 Trans Am’s off of Ebay. I probably paid way to much but they are one of those “I got to have it” items that I just got to have, lol. They look great in the pictures.

Just got back from Wally World. Nothing yet. Mine only got the Fresh Cherries in 1/64 so I’m not holding my breath on these.

FWIW … You gotta be hitting the Walmart SUPERstores. The regular Walmart stores just don’t have them. I cross-referenced all the addresses from the Reel Ride’s site for all the Walmarts where they are available, and all the ones I crossed were SUPERstores.

A check of 4 stores in the central Arkansas area found none this weekend. Did get the other Pinto wagon I was needing.

As I noticed that a lot of our Wal-Marts here are selling those 1/87th Dodge and Ford vans (retailing for 1.97 a few months ago) for a clearance price of 1.00 or 75 cents…and the Athearn HO tractors for a buck…perhaps WM is finding out (duh) that there really isn’t a collectors market for 1/87th scale vehicles. A mass market retail giant like Wal-Mart probably can’t depend on model railroader’s to keep a line going…and die-cast collectors do not recognize 1/87th as a viable collectible in the US.

Anyone else wonder if the sales of some of these items are so bad that they have to clear them out like this…will WM continue to bring in new HO models (like the new Fresh Cherries Bill reported on in MRN…) or will they abandon the HO scale vehicle market? Seems some of the HO scale vehicles must be selling OK (they aren’t drastically marked down) and some are not.

Just wondering if anyone else has a thought on this…I’m not a retail giant…but I also want some of these new '70s era vehicles! (I changed decades, need some new-old vehicles!)

I noticed that the Fresh Cherries ae selling very well at the Walmarts here in Topeka. The Malibu cars are selling decently. But, I’m peeved that I had to get one of the Malibu Land Rovers at a train show rather than at Walmart. I’m looking for the Reelrides. Would love to have some of the C10 Chevy trucks
