New Hopper with Holes

ust bought a new Micro Trains model #92000 2 bay ACF center flow covered hopper in N scale and I’m thinking of using it to act as a Sand Source for my Diesel facility. Anyway, this has a round hole on either end of the hopper behind the railings. are these supposed to be there?
Never seen them before.
Please advise.

Now that’s a freight car![8D]

I work with three bay ACF hoppers in a rail yard. There are holes in the ends of real cars.It is a great place for a hobo to get a ride. Joe

They’re probably “knock holes” - you’d need to ask someone who really understands iron-ore railroading, but I think they must be used either to introduce steam to melt frozen ore loads or to allow a brake-club wielding crewmember to knock stuck-on clumps of ore loose. The Westerfield PSC cars have the same feature.
