New Jersey Central's Newark NJ Station

I was watching a program on the History Channel regarding the construction of the Prudential Center in Newark NJ. They showed the old New Jersey Central station in Newark and how it was going to be incorporated into the Arena. Has any one had a chance to see it? I have been looking for it on the web but have yet to find any photos of how the station looks now.

Well I used to commute daily on NJT thru Newark until the early 90s so I cannot comment on what it looks like today. However, MHO it shuld be declared a landmark. There is a walkway from the station to the Pru building. U can also catch the PATH train there to JC, Hoboken, Up & downtown NYC. You know at one time the PATH downtown train use to terminate in the WTC?

New Jersey Transit uses Pennslyvania Station Newark. This is the old New Jersey Central station about a block away form Pennslyvania Station.

There isn’t a Jersey Central Broad Street station anymore per se.

What is left is essentially the facade of the front of the station building which has been incorporated into the new arena complex.

Here is a picture of how it looked shortly after it was closed in 1967:

Thanks for the link. It is great they could at least save the facade of the old station any idea of how it looks now?

From the pics I saw (which unfortunately I can’t find at the moment), it looked pretty nice…Nicely sandblasted and clean. Shame there’s no more station…but thats the price of progress I guess.

Yeah but at least you can see it rather than just looking at photos. Imagin if they had done that for Penn Station and the Garden. How cool would that be to have an art deco Madeson Square Garden.

what part of Austin are you from? I am looking for great area to watch trains…

The former MoPac line runs thru town. The UPRR uses it usually for NB traffic & uses the old Katy for the SB which goes thru Bastrop. There are 2 sidings one in south Austin by Slaughter & the other in NW Austin where the tracks duck under the Mopac freeway. I have averaged about 1 train per hour when I go out train fanning. It sure is not the UPRR overland route or the BNSF transcon. You can see my pix at myrailfan.com

The NB Amtrak Texas Eagle rolls thru town @ 0931 daily

I send you an e-mail. What part of the week are good to watch?
