New kid on the forum

What’s up fellas. Names Jason. 25 years old. I live in SoCal. Fairly new to model railroading. Had the prerequisite 4X8 in Dad’s garage when I was 10, had a good start on an decent sized L-shaped layout in my apartment garage, but a move forced me to tear her down. Thinking about giving her another go in my current garage. Ultimately I 'd like to do a decent room-sized layout, but space is at a premium right now. I’m a perfectionist, so I’m hoping this forum will help me out.

Other hobbies include lowered trucks (1989 Chevy C-30 crew cab, 6/8 drop on polished Alcoa’s) & Harley-Davidsons (Slammed black Road King, old-school pinstriped with 18" apes and fishtails.). I’m not really the kind of guy that one would assume was into trains, but it’s relaxing.

Just kind of curious if anybody in here is close to my age.

Welcome I am new here too but it seems like a great place for info. I am 24 and just got into Mrr. I had one of the tyco turbo trains when I was a kid but am enjoying this more!!

I am into racing (fiances`family has a 68 international harvestor scout 800 with a 454 big block) as well as modeling automotive and movies among a lot of other things. I am also doing a resto custom on a 1962 VW beetle.

Looking forward to seeing some pics of your layouts.

Curt

Older, 43, in SoCal also, was also in the garage, large scale, waiting for a new garage to get built…

…does a '71 Honda n600 Microcar that needs restoration count as a Hot Rod?

Sweet. I’d like to see some pics of that Scout.

Anythings a hot rod when you drop a big block Chevy into it…

I believe the server is still down but chack here for info on the “Team” www.gryphinracing.com

There are spec pages on both of the scouts as well as other things.

Welcome aboard!! There is a lot of good information here, I have been on this forum for a few years and have learned a lot.

I’m 44, live in Western Maryland and have a 1964 1/2 Mustang that I’m trying to bring back from the dead. Just remember, it’s not how good you weld, it’s how good you grind!!

31 here, and like you, stumbed into the hobby about 3 years ago. Havent looked back since. As the fellow above mentioned, there is alot of good info here from DCC-DC, scenry, rolling stock, track plans, bench work, locomotives, yadda yadda, etc… everything gets covered here. Oh, and there are alot of opinions here to. [:D] it is a great place to pick up info and learn important tips that can save you alot of grei, time and money. I have lost track of the number of times I have posted something here and gotten 6 replies in a few hours.

I am a professional 4x4 fabricator here in Phoenix. Got 3 4x4’s and all the goodies… but yet my gagrage at home is filled with train stuff and one huge layout… go figure. But hey, other than the random hobby knife cut, its a pretty safe hobby. [;)] .And, much cheaper too…

Welcome aboard!

Well heck, I don’t either. (I am 12 btw) I like things people wouldn’t expect from a train lover.
I like parrots, drums, Rock N’ Roll music, and really cool sportscars.

Like that K1 attack.

I was thinking along the lines of Lamborghini’s Diablo, Murciealago(SP???), and Countach.
Their new gallorado is[censored]

You like Lamborghini’s. Thier looks are quite ugly.

This is a great place for info. Don’t be to prefect or your project will be the end of it. This hobbies is highly relaxing for me and a lot of fun. This is a fun hobby and don’t be to prefect.[:D]

First of all, welcome to the forum. You can find an answer to just about any kind of question in here. I was a little older than you are when I built my first layout. Yes, it was in the garage too. It started out as an around the wall layout, until the wife ran into the garage door. Then, instead of replacing the door, I framed in a wall. [:)]

The first thing I would do is to pick up a couple of the Layout Design books from Kalmbach. They’re chock full of ideas. I downloaded RTS (a layout design program availabe FREE from Atlasrr.com. I designed my current layout (27’ x 12’) with it. It saves on a lot of wasted materials. The ONLY real downside I found with the program is that its libraries are based on Atlas track, so the widest radius the program uses is 24". I worked around that by laying the ends out where I wanted them, then connected them with flextrack. Make sure you have at least version 7.0. It has much better flextrack tooks than earlier versions.

Next: HAVE FUN!!! Model railroading is supposed to be fun.
