Bowen,
aside from a number of goods books, there is still the good old internet and Google will be your friend. Just type in " n scale track plan" and you will find tons of pages with beginner layouts, just like this one.
Check out Carl Arendt’s Micro/Small Layouts for Model Railroading for starters. Do not overlook that you can combine parts of different layouts.
In fact, the plywood “cookie-cutter” technique, also seen at the micro-layout website, could work nicely for layout elevation, since you are using a 4’x4’ benchwork. You can also use a scenery view-block (middle backdrop and/or hills/mountains) for two 2’x4’ layout sections connected via view-block tunnels.
Remember that the comfortable reach for mortals is apx. 30" and you might consider access from three of the four sides.
As to N Scale Primers, there are two books, N Scale Model Railroading, and each ‘same name book’ is excellent, at The Model train Magazine Index.
