In the 1870’s they ran along the tops of the boxcars setting the brakes on the cars to stop the train, rain or shine. Those were the only train brakes before air brakes other than reversing the engine.

Seems to me I’ve seen both the pond the horse is drinking from and the road up the hill in earlier forum threads!! Nice work!!

Thank you, i am modeling the rarely modeled area of central California. Not quite desert but trees and grass
