New loco, problems everywhere part 2

Just got a H 10-44 Proto series loco on ebay for $108.00 thought it was a great deal, $175.00 to $275.00 everywhere else i found it. Supposed to be new, box and loco appeared to be new. Ok, i am running it on Dc for now till i get my dcc going. It has dcc and sound. Problems

1 Clicking noise, the faster it moves the more rapid the click is?

2 Sound and speed slow down at furthest point away from hook up to power.

3 I have a mrc duel 280 controller.

4 Have to turn up to 50 to get sound and 75 to move

5 Will ocasionally stop and restart

6 Is their not enough power to run it, is it also broke.

7 I already reset it factory default it said “reset” but no changes.

I just took it apart and nothing looks loose however when i spin the gears every 7th revolution it clicks every time?

Any help would be great!

Ken

Take a closer look at the gears. Sounds like you have a cracked gear, or something in the gear teeth.

The clicking noise is gears on the wheels, there are 4 of them. When you are going into the curves does it get worse or try to stall? If it is the gears that are cracked, what happens is the gear opens up at the crack, sometimes wide enough that it binds on the upper gear in the truck, this will cause it to stall or stop. Try pulling at least 10 freight cars with it, this will put a load on the gears, if the gear or gears are cracked, it while be louder. When you start into a curved section of the track it might stall or stop if it has gear problems.

I don’t know if this is a newer unit than the older P2K’s that used truck assembly that was almost the same as the older Athearn units. These gears can be purchased for about $2.25 for six gears plus shipping from Horizon Hobby’s. I am not sure if they are still the same as the older P2k’s, so someone else will have to fill in that blank. But if they are the same as the older units, all you have to do is pop the lower cover off the gear box and wheel’s will drop right out. Don’t just change the one gear, do them all. Gauge your wheels, drop wheels back in and replace lower cover.

How often do you have feeder drops and how big is your bus wire? It sounds like you have some voltage loss on the far side of the layout. If it loses power for long enough (dead spot, dirty wheels, etc) it will stop and restart. Some sound decoders can be quite sensative to momentary power loss, depending on the size of the capacitor in the decoder and how long it loses power for.
