Just noticed a crew removing brush and trees along the ROW to the left of the electrical box on the BNSF track.

Hmm. Mabe a Railfan bought the land and is building their own House on the dirt[:D].

could this have to do with the rule about clearing vegetation from crossings? I don’t know how close the crossing that serves the platform is.

At about 2:00 pm today at Rochelle, I witnessed the (RR) millenium.

Our two little pre-merger locomotives, one blue-and-yellow Santa Fe and the other green BN, backed a short freight consisting mostly of refrigerator cars AROUND THE CORNER USING THAT THIRD TRACK THAT PARALLELS THE UP!

Nobody I talked to had ever seen it before, but that doesn’t mean it is so rare. It is, however, my first witness of that event in about 25 hours of watching.

And yes, the people clearing brush were railway employees.

Dang, I’ve never seen that either.

I remember catching some action on that siding a couple of years ago on the webcam.

I saw that in April when I was there. It was probably the same power that you saw. I thought that that siding was to tight of a curve to negotiate until I saw it.

I have seen short local trains on the siding you mention many times. The siding leads the BNSF trains to a (I believe) Del Monte plant that is acuatually on the U.P. main and the siding allows BNSF trains to access the plant. The track on the siding is really bad and the BNSF trains go VERY slow on it.

I just looked on the Rochelle web cam and saw the cleared vegitation you all have spoken about. When the BNSF locals back into the DelMonte plant a crew member often walks along that side of the track between the switch controling the siding and the crossing, and it seems sometimes hard as the foliage has been very thick there so the removal of the busehes is likely to help the crews avoid getting hurt.

At least at one time, the C&NW and the BN would trade off which rr would switch that plant. I think it was 6 month intervals. So when it was UP’s turn, months would go by when you would not see that curved siding be used. I do not know if the UP and BNSF have the same arrangement.

Ah only if they would take down the tree at the curve so you can really get a look of the UPRR west of the crossing. [:o)][:p][:)]

Good point, but don’t hold your breath, you’ll turn a terrible blue color while waiting.[:(]

I think I know why the clean up - a UP biz car just went through[;)]
