I am Yannis from Greece, new member here. I have been reading this forum and magazine for the last few years and its a great community & resource for information and friendly discussions. Better late than never, i registered as a member, looking forward to learn and contribute.
I am into model railroads (HO scale) for the last few years, while building scale model aircraft (1/48) for the last few decades.
I am modeling the ATSF in the mid to late sixties (settled for now on the 1964 to 1967 time frame), on the Surfline, specifically part of the area between the 22nd street yard in San Diego and Del-Mar. Hopefully in the not so distant future i will be able to build a permanent layout in a permanent house. I have almost finished designing the said layout (content for a future post). In order not wait idle up to then, i have been building a smaller training / temporary layout to practice some techniques and operations. The theme is the same, the layout size is smaller (13’ X 15’ folded dogbone), featuring a small fictional town north of Miramar and a small part of the Miramar hill itself.
Welcome, glad you’re able to join us. The Santa Fe line to San Diego is a favorite of many. My wife went to college at UCSD and traveled Amtrak to LA many times.
Congratulations on joining the forums. Sounds like you have a lot of interesting information to share.
One of my best friends is Greek. He came to Canada in his late teens all by himself and he has worked hard to make a good life here. He still keeps in regular contact with his old scouting buddies in Greece and visits every few years. When we have coffee together he always fills me in on what is happening in the ‘old country’.
Good to see you… We like international participation here. … Feel free to post in Jeffrey’s Diner where everybody is welcome to visit and make friends.
Mike, Dave, Ed, Greymatter, and Garry, thank you all for the very warm welcome!
Mike (Lehman) i really enjoyed the thread you linked, the forced perspective with the B-52’s is VERY effective. I will try to have a UH-1 (or an AH-1G) and an F-4B (if i find one in 1/100 or 1/144 scale…) on my next layout (since my era is coincident with a favorite scale aircraft modeling era of mine, namely the Vietnam war). Will post a few photos of a recently finished locomotive in the WPF thread on my next post!
Ed (gmpullman), glad to hear that your wife has enjoyed her visits! I hope you do visit sometime as well!
Dave, looking forward to contribute to the forum and learn from others!
Graymatter, being a place were tomcats ruled back at the time, Miramar easily won my heart, on top of that i really liked the scenic element of the hill.
Garry, i will most certainly drop by Jeffrey’s Diner!
Small question: If i have a work-in-progress or completed project with respect to rolling stock, is this (general discussion) the right sub-forum to post it? Structure-projects and layout related projects should go in the layout-discussion sub-forum?
Thanks again for the warm welcome! Off to post in the WPF thread!
Gidday Yannis, [#welcome] to the forum from another international member.
You’ll find plenty of projects to do, even before you start the benchwork.
Have Fun,
Hi Yannis, I’ll join with a [#welcome]to the forums. I’m in the upper mid-west, no where near your modeling location, and I’ve never been to Greece, but we do share the love of model railroading.
[#welcome] we are glad you are here too. We would love to see your design when you are ready and we certainly hope you get a permanent place to build it. [tup]
I would also like to invite you to Jeffries Diner. We are a multi national crowd there where you can find someone from New Zealand, Germany etc…all are welcome. We talk about trains and some off topic stuff with in forum rules. Come on in and visit and the first stay a while drink is on me.
Definitely model rolling stock should go into the General Discussion forum, and I would suggest that individual structures could go into the General Discussion forum as well. Layout information is pretty obvious as to where it should go. Don’t forget about the Prototype forums if you have questions about your specific railway.
There is some flexibility in regard to where a topic could be discussed. For example, if you were showing pictures of your layout in the Layout forum there would be nothing wrong with explaining what rolling stock or structures etc are in the pictures.
The rules that are strictly enforced are those regarding conduct. If you haven’t read the rules yet, you might want to familiarize yourself with them. They are posted in the second thread from the top in the General Discussion forum. Look for Steven’s smiling face!
Hello Yannis, Saw your Santa Fe War Bonnet loco on the WPF, nice modeling! I have fond memories of the A.T.S.F. having lived and worked very near the railroad’s western terminous in Richmond, Calif. In the mid. 1970s lived literally a stones throw away from the mainline in Pinole, Calif.
Dave, many thanks again for the info, i ll put it to good use.
Peter (HO-Velo), glad you liked the E8m. Richmond to Stockton was a runner up candidate for a theme for my layout (i actually put tunnels in it because of that), but the surfline has won in the end. Glad to have met a local of the area! If i am not mistaken there was some interesting street running for trains in Oakland right?
Not familar with Santa Fe’s street running in Oakland other than the Oakland Terminal Railway that was purchased by ATSF & WP from Key System.
My grandmother lived in Berkeley/Oakland and I betray my age in saying that I remember riding on the Key System with her as a child.
Sometimes I wish I’d based my under construction freelance ISL on Santa Fe’s Richmond/San Francisco carfloat operations which ceased in 1984. “Model what you know,” can be good advice.
Thanks for reviving some fond memories, Regards, Peter
