New Member - looking for published info on Earl Smallshaw's M&MM

After a hiatus from the hobby for about 15 years that started when I first got my drivers’ license and got into working on cars, I have now settled down and have a nice, dry basement with a fair amount of space and am starting the “armchair” phase of my twenty-year model railroad plan (twenty years because our second child is on the way and I am not going to have any spare time for the forseeable future).

I was always a fan of Earl Smallshaw’s articles about his Middletown and Mystic Mines RR, and was particularly fascinated by some of his urban modeling techniques and 3-d backdrop effects.

Does anyone know if there was ever a published article about him and his layout? I have a lot of his project articles, but would be curious to see the overall picture, if there ever was an article.

Scotty,
Welcome to the MR Fora !
This link (from the Index of Magazines at the top of this site) :
http://index.mrmag.com/tm.exe?opt=S&sort=A&output=3&cmdtext=“SMALLSHAW%2C+EARL”
will take you to a list of articles authored by Mr. Smallshaw, including at least two on the M&MM RR. (Doesn’t melt in your hand ? [:)] )

Probably longer ago than you can to look up, but there is a fascinating profile of Earl Smallshaw in the February 1953 Model Railroader page 11 – the man had a tremendous resume at age 19 (and the photo looks very boyish).
Anyway more responsive to your question, I can recommend two layout articles both of which were in the context of writing about The Hartford Workshop – a group of fine modelers of which Smallshaw was or is just one.
See the July 1969 Model Railroader page 34 and the May 1982 Model Railroader page 58. Both feature the layout in some detail. Also the March 1982 MR page 58 had general info about The Hartford Workshop and its members.

Thanks both of you for the information. I’ll have to check it out . . . !
